What she says

“I thought I knew the basics of UX already, it was only a glimpse.”

Tell us what you do and what your work typically entails.

As Product Owner of our customer app, I am the middle person between users, the business, and the tech team. I help decide which features to work on, make sure the team understands what is needed, and check that what we build actually helps customers. Day to day, it’s a mix of listening to feedback, setting priorities, and working with the team to get things done.

Q&A

Q: What made you join the UX Certificate Program?

In Insular, we are encouraged to find training that we can apply day to day. I checked the UX Certificate modules and they matched my work as a Product Owner. When I read the curriculum I thought, “Tamang-tama—ito talaga ang kailangan ko.” ["This is exactly what I need"]

Q: Before the program, how were things?

Joining this one-week course was a rewarding experience. I came in with some familiarity, but during the sessions I found out that there were fundamentals na ’di ko pa alam. [I still don't know]

Q: What did you do first after joining? Any ‘Aha’ moments?

My aha! moment was when we tackled usability testing. We’ve been revamping our customer app for a while. Nung na-refresh ako doon sa mga guidelines, I realized: "Oops! Mali na pala ginagawa ko. Oops! Parang meron na pala akong kulang." [When I was refreshed about the guidelines, I realized: "Oops! I'm actually doing it wrong!" And, "Oops! I think we're actually missing the mark!"]

One of my wins is discovering theories like the Norman Door and the ABCS of UX that I thought alam ko na pero ’di pa pala—glimpse pa lang pala ang alam ko. [I thought I already knew, but it turns out, I only knew a glimpse (about UX).]

Q: What surprised you about the process?

Compared to other trainings na nasalihan before, kala ko in-depth na ’yun. [Compared to other training I joined from before, I thought those trainings were already in-depth.] If you look at the topics, ganun din, pero ito mas malalim—bawat topic talaga and the explanations. [If you look at the topics, it's similar to other training programs but during this training I realized, this program dives in deeper for each topic, including the explanations]

Rachel tried to relate how we can apply those theories and concepts, para mas maintindihan namin at para mas-appreciate namin siya. [so we understand and appreciate the theories and concepts better.]

’Yun ang nakita kong difference. I believe I am more guided—mas confident na ako na gawin ang mga ABCs. Feeling ko mas lumawak yung UX thinking ko. [Those were the differences. I believe I am more guided, more confident doing the ABCs (of UX). I feel like my knowledge of UX thinking expanded.]

Q: Where are things now?

I enjoyed the process of unlearning kung ano’ng alam ko from before and re-learningwith details. [I enjoyed the process of unlearning what I knew from before and re-learning with details.] This training is more detailed than what I learned before—and the theories are more complete. It allowed me to gain a fresh perspective and a stronger foundation after the course.

Q: After the program, what changed? What impact did it have on others?

During the training, we were also running a usability test while revamping our customer app. Sakto yung mga discussions—what to ask, how to ask good versus bad questions—so na-apply ko kaagad. [These discusions were exactly what I needed: 'what to ask, how to ask good versus bad quesions'-- I applied what I learned immediately!] Na-refresh ako: “Oh, napag-aralan namin ’to—bawal nga pala yung ganitong tanong.” [When I was refreshed (about usability test guidelines) I said, "Oh, when I learned this, we were doing these questions wrong"]
That immediately improved how our team approached testing.

Q: What would you tell someone who’s unsure about taking the next step?

Don’t think twice! Join! Sobrang sulit. [It's worth it!] Compared to other courses sa UX, sulit talaga and ang daming learnings. [Compared to other UX courses, this is worth it and there are so many new learnings.] Lumawak talaga yung nalaman ko about UX. [The training program really helped expand my knowledge about UX.]

“I thought I knew the basics—turns out it was just a glimpse. The program gave me depth, structure, and the confidence to apply UX daily.”
